India has endorsed the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, joining over 20 like-minded nations committed to shaping the future of sixth-generation wireless communications based on the principles of openness, interoperability, security, resilience, resource efficiency, and innovation-led competition. The endorsement was announced on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial, held in North Carolina, United States, on September 1-2, 2026, under the US G20 Presidency.
The global partnership seeks to accelerate the development of secure 6G wireless networks and coordinate national strategies ahead of the technology’s expected rollout in the 2030s.
For India, the initiative complements its ongoing efforts in global standardisation and spectrum forums, as the country aims to contribute 10 per cent of global 6G standards and patents and strengthen its position in shaping the next generation of wireless technology.
India joins other governments that have affirmed the Call to Action, including Canada, Costa Rica, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Honduras, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Norway, Paraguay, the Republic of Korea, Romania, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Welcoming the development, Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya M. Scindia said in a post on X:
“Bharat For 6G! An absolute delight to announce India’s endorsement of the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, joining 24 like-minded nations in advancing an open, interoperable, secure and resilient next-generation network.
This global partnership will help accelerate the development of secure 6G wireless networks and coordinate national strategies well ahead of 6G’s expected rollout in the 2030s. For Bharat, this complements our ongoing work in global standardisation and spectrum fora, as we strive to secure 10% of global 6G standards. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will take forward India’s engagement under the Call to Action and coordinate follow-up activities with concerned government agencies, industry, academia and other stakeholders, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Communications.
Under the Call to Action, participating governments recognise secure digital infrastructure as essential to technological competitiveness, economic prosperity and national security. The initiative notes that advanced telecommunications networks will form the gateway to and core of this infrastructure, underpinning major economic and societal activities and the delivery of critical services.
It also recognises that globally interconnected communications systems can create cyber, economic and national security risks, making strong baselines for network security and resilience a shared responsibility. Shaping the future of 6G, therefore, requires coordinated action and collaboration among governments, industry, academia and other stakeholders.
India’s participation builds on its domestic 6G ecosystem, including the Bharat 6G Vision, Bharat 6G Alliance and indigenous 4G and 5G technology stack. In line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the goal of Viksit Bharat 2047, engagement under the Call to Action will complement India’s ongoing work in international standardisation and spectrum forums, without prejudice to the country’s independent positions in those forums.
