World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reached eastern Congo’s Bunia today, which is the epicentre of a rare type of Ebola virus outbreak that continues to spread despite better-organised health facilities and freshly arrived aid.
Mr Tedros is expected to visit a treatment centre and meet local authorities, health workers and affected families. He said the priority is to provide all necessary support at the outbreak’s epicentre.
Health authorities have reported 906 suspected Ebola cases and 223 suspected deaths in Congo, while neighbouring Uganda has confirmed nine cases and one death. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.
