Nepal Government arrears surge to NPR 1284 billion in 2024-25

In Nepal, the arrears of government offices and state-run corporations from all three tiers of government have reached Rs 1284 billion. According to the 62nd annual report of the Office of the Auditor General, there is a steady rise in the amount of arrears.

The money to be recovered is categorised under different sections- auditing, revenue, foreign grant to be reimbursed, and settlement of loan.

Among the updated arrears, the federal government offices owe Rs 375.47 billion, while the provincial government offices owe Rs 30.48 billion and the local government offices owe Rs 2.28 billion. Similarly, the state-run corporations hold arrears of Rs 1.94 billion.

 

Accepting the report, the President’s office in a statement emphasised that there is a need for office-bearers of public office to be more responsible and accountable in financial discipline and to enhance fiscal responsibility.
