With Pakistan and China ramping up their nuclear missile capabilities, India has taken a decisive step to strengthen its defense. New Delhi is installing Russia’s advanced Voronezh radar system in Karnataka’s Challakere, within the DRDO campus. This powerful radar boasts an impressive range of 8,000 km, extendable to 10,000 km, enabling India to monitor activities deep within Pakistan and China. The high-tech radar is designed to detect ballistic missiles, stealth aircraft, and other aerial threats with ease, allowing India to respond in real time through its air defense systems. Positioned in Karnataka, approximately 1,800 km from China, the radar’s extended reach ensures comprehensive surveillance across the region, making it a vital addition to India’s strategic defences.
Voronezh Radar: Cutting-Edge Features
The Voronezh radar is capable of operating across several wavebands, enabling it to perform diverse functions effectively. It can simultaneously track not one but hundreds of targets while detecting incoming missiles in real-time. this capability makes it India’s robust shield against potential threats. The system will enhance India’s ability to detect and destroy enemy missiles with its deadly air defence systems, providing a broader security coverage.
Strengthening India-Russia Ties
It is worth noting that, India will produce 60 percent of this radar system domestically, gaining crucial insights into advanced radar technology. Despite global sanctions on Russia due to the ongoing war with Ukraine, USD 4 billion deal underscores the unbreakable friendship between India and Russia.
Experts see this deployment as a strategic move to improve India’s border surveillance and defence capabilities.
Proven Efficiency of the Voronezh Radar
Russia already has ten such radar systems in use since 2012. Designed to counter ballistic missile threats, the radar has advanced electronic beam technology and uses minimal power.
Compared to older models, the Voronezh radar is more efficient and quick to build.
This deployment marks a significant leap in India’s defence preparedness, showcasing its commitment to maintaining a secure and robust defense infrastructure.
