External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday met Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin in New Delhi on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit, with the two leaders discussing ways to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Jaishankar said the discussions focused on advancing cooperation in trade, connectivity and culture, with both sides agreeing on a focused roadmap to take the partnership forward.
“A good conversation on advancing our ties including in trade, connectivity and culture. Agreed on a focused roadmap to that end. Appreciate Uruguay’s support for deepening partnership with CELAC and MERCOSUR,” Jaishankar said in a post on X.
He also said that he received Uruguay’s Instrument of Ratification to the International Solar Alliance.

The meeting comes as India and Uruguay seek to deepen their bilateral engagement, particularly in trade and economic cooperation.
In July, Binoy George was appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Uruguay. Meanwhile, Uruguay’s Ambassador to India, Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla, had welcomed India’s decision to open an embassy in Uruguay, describing it as an important step towards strengthening bilateral ties.
Amarilla had also called for greater high-level engagement between the two countries, saying Uruguay would be pleased to host Prime Minister Narendra Modi and would also welcome a visit by the President of Uruguay to India.
He said Latin America was emerging as an increasingly important partner for India as the country moves towards becoming a developed economy, and highlighted the scope for expanding cooperation across productive sectors.
The Uruguayan envoy also stressed the need to further strengthen economic engagement between India and Latin American countries.
Jaishankar also met his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira in New Delhi on Friday as the BRICS Summit got underway. During the meeting, the two ministers discussed enhancing cooperation in trade and investment, defence, energy, agriculture and space.
Lubetkin arrived in New Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS Summit and was received by senior officials from the Ministry of External Affairs.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 under its 2026 BRICS Chairship. India’s chairship is guided by the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, with development, sustainability and innovation among its key areas of focus.
BRICS has emerged as an important platform for coordination among major emerging economies and for advancing the interests of the Global South in multilateral institutions. Its agenda covers development, finance, technology, trade and people-to-people exchanges.
The grouping currently comprises 11 countries — Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.
