Amnesty International says that the internet shutdown in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir has entered its twelfth consecutive day, while disruptions to mobile network services continue.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 16, Amnesty International’s South Asia office said the restrictions were imposed on June 5 following calls for protests by the Joint Awami Action Committee of Jammu and Kashmir.
The rights organization said the internet blackout has created an “information blackout” in the region, disrupting people’s access to information and essential services.
According to Amnesty International, the restrictions have also hindered efforts to document human rights violations.
The organization called on Pakistani authorities to immediately restore all communication services.
Amnesty stressed that widespread or complete internet shutdowns are disproportionate measures under international human rights standards and should not be imposed.
The organization warned that the continuation of these restrictions could seriously violate fundamental rights, including access to healthcare, freedom of movement, and access to information.
