President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has written to U.S. President Donald Trump seeking relief from recently imposed reciprocal tariffs on Sri Lankan exports. Labour Minister Anil Jayantha Fernando confirmed in Parliament that the White House has acknowledged receipt of the letter.

In his message, President Dissanayake flagged potential risks to Sri Lanka’s economy and proposed discussions to mitigate the impact. He also conveyed Sri Lanka’s readiness to negotiate and explore collaborative solutions.

Plans are underway to dispatch a delegation to Washington to push for concessions.

While no immediate effects have materialised, the move signals growing concern over external fiscal shocks. Meanwhile, President Dissanayake assured the public that extensive discussions are underway to create a resilient economy capable of withstanding such external pressures.
