Pakistan’s media landscape is currently facing significant challenges, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) urging the government to promptly address the arrears owed to journalists. This call highlights the ongoing financial struggles within the media sector, where many journalists have not received their due payments for extended periods.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has reported a concerning rise in the underpayment and dismissal of journalists across Pakistan. Studies indicate that a substantial number of media workers are working under contracts or third-party agreements, often without receiving their rightful wages. The IFJ has called on the Pakistani government to implement immediate measures to resolve these issues and protect media workers’ rights.

In addition to financial challenges, the media in Pakistan is facing increasing threats to press freedom. The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND) has expressed deep concern over the suppression of media freedom, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to protect journalists and uphold free expression.

Furthermore, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has challenged the controversial Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act, 2025, in the Islamabad High Court, describing it as an attack on media freedom. The PFUJ argues that the law expands governmental control and curtails free speech, violating constitutional rights.

These developments underscore the critical need for immediate action to address the financial and legal challenges faced by journalists in Pakistan, ensuring the protection of press freedom and the rights of media workers.
