In a landmark achievement for India’s agricultural exports, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully facilitated the first-ever commercial sea shipments of Indian pomegranates to Australia. Collaborating with AgroStar and Kay Bee Exports, APEDA oversaw the export of premium Sangola and Bhagwa pomegranates, marking a significant expansion of market access for Indian fresh produce.
Following the signing of a work plan and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in February 2024, the first air shipment of Indian pomegranates reached Australia in July 2024. This air shipment helped gauge market demand, paving the way for sea shipments, which offer cost efficiency. The first sea-freight shipment departed India on December 6, 2024, and arrived in Sydney on January 13, carrying 5.7 metric tons (MT) of pomegranates sourced from Maharashtra’s Solapur region. Packed in 1,900 boxes, the shipment showcased India’s capacity to export high-quality fruit in bulk. A second shipment, carrying 1,872 boxes of the Bhagwa variety, arrived in Brisbane on January 6.
These sea shipments, integrated with India’s traceability system, ANARNET, ensured transparency and bolstered consumer confidence in international markets. Upon arrival, the pomegranates received an overwhelmingly positive response in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, with immediate requests for additional shipments, highlighting the growing trade potential between India and Australia. The timing of the shipment, during Australia’s non-producing season, strategically maximised market opportunities for Indian exporters.
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev praised the milestone, noting that India’s agricultural export sector is witnessing unprecedented growth, with fresh fruit exports up by 29% year-on-year. “Pomegranates have seen a 20% growth, and this successful shipment underscores India’s ability to meet global quality standards. Our advanced traceability systems ensure consumer trust and open new revenue streams for Indian farmers,” he said.
This development is expected to boost bilateral trade ties between India and Australia and enhance opportunities for Indian farmers and agri-entrepreneurs.
