The Union Ministry of Defence has cleared the proposal for the construction of the Bhubhu Jot tunnel, which will serve as an alternative route to Leh and Ladakh. The Ministry of Defence has officially recommended to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways that the Bhubhu Jot tunnel, along with the Ghatasani-Shillai-Bhubhu Jot-Kullu National Highway, be designated as a project of strategic importance.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the Bhubhu Jot tunnel project. “I met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on October 25, 2024, and requested him to accord priority to the project, considering its strategic importance. I had also raised the issue with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. The construction of the tunnel will be a milestone for the development of the state.” he added.
In its communication, the Ministry of Defence highlighted the critical role of this highway and how the tunnel would serve as an alternative route to Leh and Ladakh, significantly enhancing the operational readiness of the armed forces in forward areas. Besides its strategic significance, the tunnel was expected to bring substantial socio-economic benefits to the region and the budgetary provision for the project would be made accordingly.
The Bhubhu Jot tunnel when ready would reduce distance between Kangra and Kullu by over 50 km, immensely benefit the local population and boost tourism in the region, thereby strengthening the economy of the people. The state government was prioritising tunnel construction to enhance road connectivity, promote sustainable development and minimise environmental impact.
