Bonzi advanced to the second round after holding his nerve to win 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 0-6, 6-4 at Flushing Meadows in New York. In another match, twenty-four-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia made a triumphant return to major competition, overcoming spirited teenager Learner Tien in the first round. The seventh-seeded Djokovic defeated the 19-year-old American 6-1, 7-6, 6-2 in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
